Miniature American Shepherd

Miniature American Shepherds

The origins

Origin: United States

Originally, the American Miniature Shepherd was a selection from “small” Australian shepherds. In the 1960s, a Californian breeder fell in love with small Australian shepherds (used in rodeos). She started a breeding program based on a selection of breeders according to their size.

The breed was recognised for years in the 90s. After a few generations, the characteristics were fixed. In order to distinguish it completely from its ancestor, breeders no longer made “crosses” between the two breeds, and fixed the characteristics of this new breed under the name of Miniature American Shepherd.

The aim of selection in this breed today is to maintain the small size, playfulness and shepherding ability. Affectionate, loyal, gentle, playful, faithful, it is an excellent family dog. However, his small size should not make us forget that he has the instincts of a shepherd dog and needs to be exercised.

The character

The Miniature American Shepherd is an intelligent dog. He has a pronounced instinct for herding and guarding. Very easy to train.

He is an energetic dog and needs to be exercised, most dog clubs offer plenty of opportunities.

His movements are fluid, easy and balanced. His exceptional agility combined with strength and endurance allow him to work on a wide variety of terrains.

This highly versatile and energetic dog has great intelligence. He is both a loyal companion and a docile worker. His expression is attentive

Health

The Miniature American Shepherd is a relatively robust dog.

However, like all dogs, they should be fed a quality diet, treated against external and internal parasites, and brushed weekly or more often if necessary.

It is important to clean the ears often with a wipe as well as the eyes with saline solution, especially for the white/blue eyes which are more sensitive than the other colours, also if they are red, in contact with water and the sun for several hours.
